Powered by a single 100 hp (75 kW) Rotax 912 iS fuel-injected engine with a three-bladed composite propeller. Icon Aircraft claims that the aircraft competes with power sports vehicles such as ATVs, motorcycles, watercraft, and snowmobiles, rather than other airplanes.
The two-seater aircraft features foldable wings, retracted landing gear, and Garmin G3X Touch with Autopilot for easy sport flying. The Icon A5 can reach a Max speed of 109 mph and a range of 427 nautical miles.

Risk Areas
Claim History
ICON A5 has a fairly good claim history. The Icon A5 has been involved in several accidents: about 2 fatal accidents and other non-fatal accidents. However, all recorded accidents have been a result of pilot errors.
Although the ICON A5 can be flown by inexperienced pilots, this has not been a cause of accidents. In fact, all the accidents involving this aircraft have been by high-time experienced pilots rather than low-time sports pilots. No accident has been caused by mechanical problems.
Safety Features
ICON A5 amphibious aircraft have ICON Parachute System (IPS). The parachute can be used in emergencies, even at very low altitudes. The plane also has an Angle of Attack (AoA) indicator for stall awareness.
The A5 is the first light sport aircraft with a spin-resistant airframe that keeps it under control always. Spin resistance helps to prevent spin if there’s a stall.
ICON launched a risk assessment app to help ICON A5 pilots in pre-flight planning. The app provides additional safety for pilots flying the A5.
The aircraft is equipped with the state-of-the-art Garmin that has an optional 2-axis autopilot to enhance situational awareness. It also features the Garmin G3X Touch with Autopilot that has a return-to-level (LVL) mode.
There’s a Garmin GMC 507 control panel for the optional autopilot. It manages several advanced in-flight modes that greatly lower workload and enhance situational awareness throughout the flight phases.
