Aircraft Summary

Robinson Helicopters has dominated the delivery numbers because they are low cost and easy to operate. Robinsons are operated primarily by owner and flight schools. The Robinson R22 and R44 are trainer aircraft that flight schools like to use because they are low cost. The R66 is the preferred turbine powered helicopter among owner pilots.

Liability premium is based on the number of seats and typically accounts for 15% – 30% of the overall premium. The remaining 70% – 85% is from the hull value premium.

Liability limits on Robinson helicopters can range from $1,000,000 to $10,000,000. This is pretty low as an industry standard, but because Robinson doesn’t carry the standard Products Liability as the manufacturer of the helicopter. Insurance companies have chosen to limit their exposure to products liability in the event of a subrogation claim for a faulty product.

Deductibles can range from $5,000 In Motion to 5% of the Insured Value.

An easy way to estimate or visualize the premium for a Bell Helicopter is: 3%, 4%, and 5%.

  • 3% of the hull value for owner or pro pilots with high time (ie 2,000 total time) and $1,000,000 liability limit
  • 4% of the hull value for lower time pilots or transitioning pilots. Also for operations requiring higher liability limits like $5,000,000 to $20,000,000
  • 5% of the hull value for lower time pilots, high liability limits, and commercial operations for hire
  • 6% of the hull value for older aircraft and riskier operations like pilots over 70 years old

Valuation

Robinson helicopters hold their value relatively well. This depends largely on the supply and demand of the market and the model.

Risk Areas

The hardest operations to insure for Robinsons are transitioning pilots with little experience in a R66 requesting over $1,000,000 in liability. Pilots over 70 can have a difficult time if they are looking for new relationships. Flight schools with a negative loss ratio to premium.

Claim History

Helicopters have a much higher claim’s ratio than airplanes. The reason for this is because even a small impact like a bird strike or tail boom is often reported as a total loss to the helicopter. Robinson Helicopters have the highest claims history as a helicopter manufacturer but keep in mind they also have the largest nominal number in operation.

Because there are so many of them, insurance companies have a lot of data on the claims history.

Safety Features

The Robinson R66 is reliable, economical, and easy to maintain. The R22 and R44 are reciprocating engines. It’s pretty easy to get insurance quotes on these aircraft as long as the operator is OK with low liability limits like $1,000,000 per occurrence sub $100,000 per passenger.
