Aircraft Summary

The Cessna 206 is called the Stationaire and like the 172 and 182 it is also a single singe, high wing aircraft. Cessna started production in 1962 and it remains in production today. The cool thing about the 206 is it has six seats, a Contininental engine producing 260 horsepower, and a payload with full fuel around 800 pounds. It’s one of the highest in it’s category of single engine recipes for max payload. The Cessna 206 is more of an owner operator than a flight trainer because it costs more, has two extra seats, and more power than needed for flight training. The range for the 206 and 182 are similar at around 800 nautical miles.

Valuation

The older and lower cost Cessna 206 Stationair are $200,000. A new base model Cessna 206 Turbo Stationair HD from the Textron factory is $915,000. The same aircraft with options including air conditioning and Garmin synthetic avionics is $1,020,000. Textron’s lead time for new orders is one year.

Risk Areas

Older pilots in a new Cessna 206 will be looked at closely by the underwriters. When pilots are over 70 years old underwriters will consider their flight experience leading up to 70 years old and require lower liability limits and potentially increased rates.

A few other types of Cessna 182 operations that can be difficult to insure are naming over 3 -4 pilots on the policy or greater than 3 fractional owners. The reason being it’s just a lot of other competing underwriters to look at and as a result get a competing quote.

Claim History

Cessna 206 aircraft are used a lot of times by owner flown pilots. For insurance we call this Part 91 Pleasure & Business and this operation typically has less claims than your standard flight schools where you’d see aircraft more like the Cessna 172 or 182. Claims are relatively low and predictable for insurance companies to underwrite.

Safety Features

The Cessna 206 is the most expensive piston single engine Textron makes. There’s a lot of safety features like the high wing design which allows for great visibility from the cockpit. The newer 206s also have a Garmin G1000 with an option for synthetic vision, which helps significantly with shooting IFR approaches. The Garmin G1000 also enhances the pilots situational awareness and spatial orientation.
