Aircraft Summary

The Cessna 182 is nicknamed the Skylane and looks very similar to the Cessna 172 but it’s slightly bigger, has an option for retractable landing gear, and a more powerful Lycomming engine with 230 horsepower. Cessna first developed it in 1956 and it continues to be a well built aircraft in high demand from flight schools to owner pilots. Like the 172 the 182 Skyland is a four seater, high wing aircraft. It’s flown throughout the world for training and pleasure and business. A brand new Cessna 182 Skylane is around $675,000, for the base model and can range up to $745,000. It also includes the Garmin G1000 NXi avionics and a three blade propeller.

Risk Areas

Pilots over 75 years old typically start having a hard time finding new insurance or start getting pressure from their existing insurer that rates are increasing, liability limits decreasing, annual medical, annual EKG, or eventually requiring dual pilots.

It can also start to get complicated trying to name over 3 – 4 pilots on the policy or over 2 fractional owners. But for the most part a Cessna 182 is easy to insure.

Claim History

Cessna 182 are used by a lot of flight schools so the typical claim is a hard landing or hangar crash. Insurance companies have good actuary information on a Cessna 182 because there’s a significant number of them in operation. Claims are consistent but predictable for the insurance companies.

Safety Features

A Cessna 182 is a high wing aircraft which allows for great visibility from the cockpit. The newer 182s have a Garmin G1000 avionics with the options for synthetic vision which helps with shooting instrument approaches, spatial orientation, and situational awareness.

Insurance rates for a Cessna 182 are low. They start at 1% of the hull value. Insurance companies have determined it is a safe aircraft and profitable manufacturer to underwrite.
