Aircraft Summary

The Cessna Citation CJ4 (Model 525C) is the evolved version of its predecessor, the Citation CJ3. It features a moderately swept wing design taken from the Citation Sovereign. The first flight of this aircraft took place on May 5, 2008 and deliveries began in 2010.
Two Williams International FJ44-4A engines power this model with a thrust of 3,621 pounds each and consume 186 gallons per hour (GPH). This jet has an impressive range of 1,920 nautical miles when operating under NBAA IFR with four passengers and available fuel. The Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) for this model is 17,110 pounds (7,761 kg), granting it a maximum range of 1,949 nm.

The CJ4 Gen2 is outfitted with upgraded features, including a folding airstairs with a lower step to the ground, step lighting and handrail; increased seating options; new ambient lighting, and a galley with expanded storage. Current interior certification under its Model 525C FAA type certificate has been achieved, and deliveries of the $10.75 million jet will begin in the first quarter of 2021. The galley also includes an optional high-power outlet with a pull-out surface for a coffee maker plus additional, extendable stone countertops.

Risk Areas

Some of the more difficult or expensive CJ4 operations to insure are high hull value single pilot. These are values over $6,000,000. Any single pilot with the hull value over $6,000,000 is often quota share meaning more than one insurance company taking something like a 50/50% share. Also pilots over 75 years old in single pilot operations.

Safety Features

Insurance companies require pilots operating the CJ4 to complete annual training at either a full motion based simulator or an approved training facility in-aircraft.

Insurance companies require pilots operating the CJ4 to successfully complete annual training. Depending on the insurance company it’s either going to say – a manufacturer’s approved ground and flight, simulator based initial/recurrent training course or Aviation Manager Approved training course within the preceding twelve (12) calendar months. The Aviation Manager Approved training allows for in-aircraft training if it’s approved by the insurance company.

Insurance companies that require full motion simulator training unless specifically listing an in-aircraft training approved in the Pilot Warranty – AIG, AXA XL, Starr, Old Republic, USAIG, QBE

Insurance companies that allow in-aircraft training by listing “Aviation Manager Approved Training” in the Pilot Warranty – W Brown, IAT, Beacon, Great American, London Aviation Underwriters

The Citation CJ4 has twin Williams/Rolls-Royce FJ44-4A turbofan engines with dual-channel FADECs which are extremely reliable.

Citation CJ4 insurance rates for dual pilots start at around 0.4% of the hull value and 0.8% for single pilots.
