Valuation
The Piper PA-46 Meridian is a light, single-engine aircraft that was produced from 1999 to 2014. As of 2023, the price range for this aircraft is $645,000 to $1,605,000. Of the 578 aircraft produced during its run, 538 are still in operation while 39 have been retired. There are no aircraft currently being produced.
Risk Areas
Because of its dependence on a single power plant, the PA-46 Meridian is susceptible to mechanical breakdown or fuel-related concerns. The aircraft has been approved for flight in light icing. Pilots need to be very careful to assess weather conditions and fly within the plane’s capabilities. An accident-free flight in a PA-46 Meridian depends critically on the pilot’s competence and attention, as it does in the flight of any aircraft.
From an insurance and underwriting standpoint, these are the types of risks taken into account when determining PA-46 rates and levels of coverage. When deciding on a policy and premium, an insurer may take into account the pilot’s age, total time, make and model, retractable gear, hours last 12 months, and license and ratings.
Claim History
On April 9, 2001, a Piper PA-46 Meridian had a stall while in flight and crashed into trees in Vero Beach, Florida. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the aircraft’s stall and subsequent crash with trees were caused by the pilot’s inability to maintain proper airspeed. Yet, the Meridian has an excellent history of passenger safety.
Safety Features
The Piper PA-46 Meridian is equipped with a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A turboprop engine, known for its reliability, efficiency, and low maintenance costs. The Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system constantly monitors the engine and provides real-time diagnostics to the pilot.
The aircraft also features Emergency Descent Protection, unique to the PA-46 Meridian, which protects against engine failure at a high altitude. Further safety features include Electronic Stability Protection (ESP), which detects and corrects deviations from the intended flight path, and Coupled Go-Around and Automatic Level Mode, which provide additional safety during takeoff and landing.
