Risk Areas

Claim History

The Turbo Commander series has a good claim history and a great safety record. The Twin Commanders were once referred to as AD magnets and service nightmares because of the wing spar corrosion issues.

The Twin Commander Aircraft Corporation (TCAC) issued a service bulletin that offered guidance and a kit for fixing the wing spar problem. The FAA later issued an AD ordering the fixing of the spar caps. This repair cost approximately $75,000.

The TCAC also dealt with other big service issues before the FAA did. They involved the flap cables and pulleys that were wearing and binding. TCAC issued a service bulletin and provided a fix for the problem. It cost $3,600.

These and other active support the TCAC provided to Twin Commander owners turned the aircraft image around. The Twin Commanders currently have one of the best service and support networks of any turboprop twin.

Safety Features

The Turbo Commander/Twin Commander series are powered by TPE331 engines that have quick throttle response for shorter take-offs. The TPE331 engines are very reliable and have long maintenance intervals.

The Turbo Commander 690 / 840 / 900 / 980 / AC 1000 are strong and reliable aircraft that provides excellent visibility for pilots, and the large tail provides stability. The long, high wing of the aircraft supplies excellent climbing ability and low stall speed.

As of 2008, most of these aircraft were fitted with Meggitt Avionics’ new generation Integrated Cockpit (MAGIC). MAGIC features two redundant Engine Display Units (EDU) that presents crucial information for the operation of turbine engines, including fuel quantity and usage calculations.

The Air Data Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS) provides attitude information throughout the flight. The Data Acquisition Unit (DAU) can automatically record data crucial for engine condition trend monitoring to enhance safety as ensure engine condition.
